For this project, we were tasked with recreating a historical building of our choice. I decided to choose the historic Elizabeth Cady Stanton House in my hometown of Tenafly, NJ. Elizabeth Cady Stanton was a suffragette and her house was built in 1886 in a Colonial Revival style. The house was very detailed so I decided to simplify the house when building it out of clay. I started by creating four slabs for the walls and putting the detail on the slabs before putting the walls together. I mainly used my hands and used minimal tools. I focused on putting details on all four walls. The sculpture changed quite rapidly as I was working in order to keep it together and stop it from collapsing. Although in the end, it didn’t look anything like the Elizabeth Cady Stanton house it was something very new for me to do and I learned a lot more about clay and hand building.
