02/02 “Why paint humans?

02/02/2018

What is it, about people, that attracts me?

A soft, kind breeze hoovered over the peaceful streets of Le Marais, as a sign of the colder weather yet to come. Embracing my furred denim jacket, I paced towards the place that would now be my home for the next three years. In the security of my cosy and humble appartment I leaned over the harshness and coldness of the glass-window, quietly observing those that walked past.

Right in that moment, I grabbed a few pencil and paper, feeling that familiar rush of excitement, like a paper burning with fire, like a thunder lighting my veins. I could almost fuse my essence with the dusty walls behind me, camouflaged like a black cat in the middle of the darkest night. My eyes carefully watching over others, those unaware of my presence. What is it, about the way people moved, about the way people talked and smiled, that made me so intensely interested? Was it jealousy that made me want to take part in that moment of spontaneous happiness? Or was it something about the spontaneity of being immersed in a moment that will disappear, never soon enough?

Most marvel about other sorts of things, like gadgets or the new launch of the iphone x , what it is to offer in a world of advancements in the technological realm. On the contrary, my thoughts trailed the start of human existence, wonder about everyday humans, about their ordinary life, but especially about what runs through our mind and what makes each and every of us a piece of the same puzzle, all different and yet the same. Perhaps this is why I love so much painting, sketching or writing about us.

As you can already guess, my name is Oihana. I will be sharing my work during my first year as an Art student at Parsons Paris. Hope you enjoy it!
