Initial Studio Prototype + Critique Feedback

Studio Final Prototype

During the break, I composed a back piece with a type of foam used under carpets. The inner piece, is constructed with sewn plastic bags that are normally used to maintain fruits and vegetables in the fridge. All the materials used are related to the kitchen and housekeeping duties. This represents the contemporary woman, that is still struggling to overcome traditions and stereotypes on what it means to be a woman and to behave like a lady. This is why the inner piece of the skirt contains plastic bags, that will represent this hidden struggle.

Critique Feedback + Next Steps

After the critique, several ideas arose as to what to change in my initial prototype for the Final studio project. In terms of the top piece I created, it was discussed that it would be better to concentrate the project in the back piece, the skirt, as it signifies more gender roles, as opposed to the top part that resembled too much a corset. In terms of display, I now will hang the garment from the ceiling, to show more the inner part that contains the bags and detach my work from the fashion realm into a more artistic one.

Also, not displaying it in a mannequin further pushes the idea of the dress as more of an entity and not a body. I also determined that the plastic bags will contain different woman’s story, women from different ages and cultural backgrounds will be able to share their thoughts on what it means to behave as a lady, depending on how their experience is or how their thoughts are regarding this question, different stories will be placed in different places in the skirt. Stories that have a more emotional charge will be colocated in the bottom part, where the weight of their words is heavier than in others.

As you can already guess, my name is Oihana. I will be sharing my work during my first year as an Art student at Parsons Paris. Hope you enjoy it!
