Four Year Future Collage

Artist Statement

No one can ever predict where we’ll be in a couple of years. In middle school, I never knew that I would be in the marching band in high school and within those years I was on three  tv shows, became a drum major for a marching band, and got accepted into The New School Parsons. Now as a first year at the New School I don’t know what life can offer me now. So far attending this school has been a roller coaster, I’ve had nothing but drama since the beginning and having alot of my tech be broken and wasting so much money to fix things. But I’m hoping that next semester will be better for not just me but for everyone else. For our last and final project in Integrative Studio, we were challenged to create a collage of what we see ourselves in the next 4 years. We had to predict what we imagined what our future might be in the next four years. Some people thought about how much they’ll learn, some don’t want to grow up, and others want to travel. I wanted to help my family. I wanted to be the family member that could provide my whole family by the time I can graduate college. I want to be able to pay for my brothers college, get my father a new fishing boat, and help mother buy her dream house. After realizing what I wanted, it seemed like I wanted to be generous. Generosity is a huge part of my culture and how I grew up. I’m from the South and we have this thing called Southern Hospitality, so naturally I am usually kind to people when I meet them. I always want to help people out whenever they need it. Since moving to the North, I’ve notice the change of people. It’s true people up North are super rude. No one ever holds the door open, people cut in line, and no one ever says hi to each other walking down the street. I wanted to create a piece that was interactive. I decided to have a basket with a bunch of hands with a note saying take a hand if you need one. Within the hands are a little notes of generosity that people could do for themselves and others. I wanted something simple and portable to care the piece because I see that generosity shouldn’t be something for people to work for but be able to receive effortlessly. I want nothing more to help people out especially to the ones close to me. Overall, this project really touched me. I’ve never missed home as badly as I ever had. I miss my family so much and I happy to say that I’ll see them soon. This project made me realize how much I wanted to accomplish in life and one day I’ll be there to help my friends and family.
