Week 7: Zone Walk and final project ideas

1) Complete your zone walk

Take a walk to experience and observe different evacuation zones in NYC.

  • How does having an awareness of evacuation zones change the way you experience your walk and the area around Parsons?

I rarely go to anyplace closer to the river than 6th Avenue. I found there is less people and the building are not as close as they are in the center of Manhattan.

  • What areas appear to be vulnerable to storm surge, if any?

The area near river because it’s dangerous when water rises. Retail stores and restaurants are vulnerable, too. If the apartment and house are in storm, they have the first layer to be a buffer. But the others will be ruined directly by water.

  • Do any buildings/infrastructures look more prepared for the next storm — how?

I think all higher apartments looks better than single house. The basements are definitely going to be damaged.

  • Are any effects of Hurricane Sandy visible?

I didn’t see through my walking.

  • Choose one zone (1-6) as your focus. What is a design idea you have that would communicate/show people what zone they inhabit? What kind of tool, device or signage would you make?  Include a list of 3-5 challenges you would face in implementing this project in NYC (think about resiliency of materials, language issues, access to information, visibility during different times of day or during storms, diversity of public etc.).

Actually my idea coulee be used on any of the zones. I want to design a souvenir which is made by a piece of metal, like a necklace, in shape of Manhattan. The part of the specific zone is painted in other colors or made by another material. On the back, there will be a impressed word “evacuation zone xx” to mention what is that shape for. The challenge for me is how to make people understand clearly it’s something about the zone instead of simply an accessory. Another challenge is how often it should appear in different stores, on the road or in restaurants which be seen by people in order to be recognized? I also consider is there enough information for people to realize the importance of evacuation zones, because the form of accessory seems not serious enough.

  1. What will you make and why? (an object, clothing, set of tools, skill manual, a design for connecting you to other people, animals or the earth, calms/relieves stress etc.)

I will make clothing which are multifunctional and sustainable. They have multi parts and different function. They don’t need package because they are package by themselves, and the construction is easy to fix if it’s damaged.

2) In what ways will this object be useful to you over 50 years of change?

The style of clothing is simple but useful. I can use them in daily life. It’s made of fabric, thread, zipper and snappers, which can be easily changed or fixed by myself.

3) What specific event(s) of environmental changes will it help you navigate?

The clothing can be used in daily life. When it comes to situation which I need to carry something or pack it smaller, it can transform into a bag or folded in to small size pocket.

4) How will it be resilient (use of materials, used in more than one way etc.) and/or encourage social resiliency through its usage ?

The idea comes from raincoat and folded travel bags. It’s more sustainable to make a garment which can be turned into a package by itself. It reduce the plastic bags which are hard to recycle, and even reduce the number of paper bags which made out of trees. They are environment friendly fabric bags as well as fashion outfits.

5) Will it be designed for a particular place? (New York, your hometown etc.)

It can be worn everywhere anytime, which is global and modern.

Here is Yuzhou Lou's Blog. I will share some notes of courses, reading and personal work in my daily life. You can also call me Jen. I am from Shanghai, China. Now I live in new York, USA. I am studying at Parsons, the New school for Design as a freshman. My major in the further will be Fashion Design. Dark colors are my favorite. I like Lolita Fashion, Traditional Asian style and wedding dresses. Also, I prefer a few of gothic and punk elements. Design is part of lives. This is one thing I believe. It doesn't matter how old you are or what job do you do. Design is a style of living. Keep having day dreams. That's the way to make people create new things.
