Fragmented Memories

My interest in colours, overlaying and the importance of childhood and past push me to recreate a bag of memories that will recall the earlier period of my life. I choose to try to collage some interesting textures and play with colours and connecting the different elements to create a whole, cohesive piece and I, also, extracted some pictures from the family album to understand what clothes I was wearing and seeing what materials they were made of.

After I chose the materials that were most full of memories for me, I gather this items and start cutting them and play around to define the final shape of my memory bag.

I realised that my favourite handbag during the ages 3 to 10 was a dog shape purse all covered in pink fur. Therefore, I decided to use that as an inspiration to create an enlarged version that would loose its functionality, but would be important to carrying layers of memories and recalling moments throughout my life.

I chose to use staples and hot glue to assemble the different squares of material together as this would increase the idea of childhood and I wanted to actually create something that would be produced by a child in its early life. I decided, also, to fill the outer shape with wadding so that I would create a in-animated pet, which children could play with or have it as a pillow.

To accompany the piece in the display, I created a fabric map so that the viewers could actually feel the different materials and get a full experience of my childhood. This guide has some words written on it that are the first things that come up to my mind when I think about each material and this is the reasons why they are written in a rough way.

As more memories are being created in the years, this bag could eventually grow to resemble someone growing up.
