Core Studio 1: 2D – Project 3: Planning

For Project 3 I intend on continuing the framework with which I had been creating throughout this class. My focus in the beginning had been on bringing the essence of my sketchbook and expanding it figuratively and literally. I wanted to put these recurring characters and symbols onto a bigger composition, and to expand the backgrounds which they exist in, which I did through Project 2. In doing this project, and projects in my other classes, I realized how much of my artistic vision stems from nostalgia and my idea of home. Through my parents I had been exposed to many artistic inspirations from a young age, and I truly believe that it has impacted the art I make. This realization was what led me to create my photo essay. I wanted to pay homage to my roots, and how the sentiment of “home is where the heart is” is so important to me.

As for the execution of Project 3, I would like to create a portrait of my mother using the practices of my past projects in this class. Just like those past projects I will use paint and found objects, as well as symbols I’ve established in them. I want to paint the portrait on canvas, and then stretch it inside an embroidery hoop. I also want to put some lace fabric inside the hoop to mimic the recurring use of a white lace veil on the “Venus” character which appeared in my first two projects.
