In Bridge Project 5 the assignment was to create a political or social zine based off of a fictional book or movie. I chose the Lego Movie and the social issues within the film. In the Lego Movie, President Business is the corrupt and manipulative leader of Lego City. In order to keep the city completely under his control, Business controls and watches every citizen’s move. The two issues caused by Business in the movie are extreme limitations of creativity, and self identity. Each Lego citizen is demanded to live their lives according to a manual which orders each step of their day. For example, ‘wake up in the morning and make a cup of coffee, read the newspaper, watch TV, get ready for work, step outside and greet everyone hello with a big smile’ etc. The Lego citizens have no freedom to be themselves and plan out their own day. If each and every citizen is following this manual, there is no distinguishing between personalities, and identities. Business is creating clones by using this manual which is exactly what he wants because this helps him to stay in control and keep things orderly. Business also doesn’t allow any creative freedom to his people. No Lego citizen is allowed to create anything original or from their own mind. In the manual, I dedicated a page to explain how the citizens should follow the practices of the Master Builders (who you’ll read about in the zine).
