LP Post #4: Museum Exhibit Response

The Body:Fashion and Physique

Our clothes are an extension of our personality and character therefore it is just unfair if it’s primarily used as a form of expression of a person’s physique and size. Clothes are something that is used by everyone therefore one should definitely not have such a narrow approach towards something so diverse.

Based on these believes I was absolutely in love with the red gown designed by Christian Siriano for comedian Leslie Jones. Siriano’s approach towards creating clothes for literally everyone is the need of the hour in the industry and should definitely become a part of every designer’s vision.

The red gown beautifully accentuates Leslie Jone’s curvy waist, the off shoulder wide neck of the gown perfectly highlights her collar bones along with the dazzling diamond necklace, the thigh high slit successfully adds a spunk yet a graceful character to the dress. These elements of the dress would have been so beneficial in making its wearer feel comfortable especially cause the client wasn’t as slender. It was interesting to see that Siriano did not choose a color like black or a darker color palette as these are the colors that are used to make a person “look thinner”. Instead Siriano used a bold bright color like red which for me was the best part of the dress, its color. The red adds so much grace and energy to the dress.

I would approach any kind of a size as a very normal factor while designing a garment. Designing is the craft of accentuating one’s body no matter what size. Therefore, it is a very interesting, diverse and challenging process for me to think about ways to highlight a person’s different body parts.
