Intro to Fashion Studies – LP Post #5

Fashion is a form of expression. It is a subconscious extension of one’s personality and nature. It is a form of art, which belongs to an individual, as his or her own, it is exclusive to that individual. Therefore, there are so many emotions and expressions attached to it. Fashion is a great platform for reform and change, as it has been in the past. Fashion is individuality, boldness and eccentricity.

Society has played a great role in shaping fashion in different forms and moods. The various fashion reforms and movements like the Punk and Goth movement have had a huge influence on fashion, which pertains till now.

These subcultures have influenced the society in a massive way as it was used as form of rebellion by its followers who were extremely passionate about these movements.

Currently we live in a society, which is comparatively more open to change, and reform, which makes it easier for people to reflect on their nature and execute it through fashion. For example, how fashion is supposedly inversely proportional to age, as mentioned in the article Fashion’s Two Faced Relationship With Age,  “only in the fashion world, where the downward slope of aging occurs somewhere around 27.”  We had guest speaker Debra Rapoport come in and talk about how fashion being affected by age is just a myth.  Anyone of any age can choose to be fashionable and not feel any less confident about it just because they are too young or too old to dress and be fashionable.

In today’s time where sustainability is the need of the hour because of the exhausting resources fashion plays a big role in combating this issue. As people who believe in fashion we should implement sustainability by manufacturing long lasting clothes and by recycling clothes. We should creatively come up with different styles and ways of wearing old clothes.
