Curiosity Journal – Day 7

Tears Dry On Their Own

This song entirely depicts Amy Winehouse’s life becoming harder and harder. Not only is she alcoholic and drug addict, she is the other woman. Even though she realises that she’ll never fully love the man she is seeing, it still tremendously hurts her seeing him return to his wife everyday. She realises that he would never truly love her, and if she moved on from him she would end up in the same situation with another man. She has a cycle of always being the mistress and never the one and only.

I see an image even sadder than the one she depicts. She doesn’t bother to dry her own tears, they dry on their own with her makeup streaming down her face. She is the other woman. But, moreover, it’s about going into a sexual relationship just because she had the opportunity, even though she knows she can never have a future with him, then, inadvertently falling so in love with him she can no longer see the sun in the sky when he’s not around. Amy additionally realises that men are addicted to her, her voice, character and fame. However, she is done being the other woman, and realises that she is looking for love in all the wrong places.

She regrets giving her heart to him, his memory is a shadow which overwhelms her into a deep depression, worsening her drug and alcohol addiction.
