Midterm – Colours of Power

Colours of Power

Green and silver; some of the Thai colours of wealth and celebration. I spent five years of my life in Thailand, admiring the colours and details in jewellery, clothing and monuments. Surrounded by wealthy Thais, constantly exhibiting their power through their attires, made me realise that no matter how much the women decorate themselves, they would never outshine men in simple suits. In order to combine the simplicity of men’s outfits and elegance of women’s, I want ti create a collection justly mixing the two elements that gives each sex power. Emerald green and silver individually exude power and are often used in jewellery and high end fashion, especially gowns. However, together, they symbolise ultimate power and elegance. When incorporating unconventional elements such as chains and rings, it empowers the garment to a point where it is debatable whether it is truly power or domination. Making this a female garment, suggests that it is a woman dominating, possibly a man, in her elegant outfit. Although this dress is strappy and conveys domination, the draping adds a sense of elegance.
