Pray to Amazon; Bridge 2

I began with an outfit that I would see at a typical “Seattle Tech Nerd.” I knew I wanted to work with the pockets on cargo pants, which is what led me to this outfit.

I began by deconstructing and draping the garment. In doing this I began to think of the plastic bags pilled up at my apartment. This is when I got the idea of having the pocket essentially throw up the bags, which would be painted red to match the shirt. Next, I began to think about my mood board. I wanted this to be about bulbousness and pockets, but I ended up not really using this mood board in the end.
I continued to drape and cut up the original outfit. In think of the questions assigned for the previous bridge project, I wanted to consider a time when garments were an art form, which led me to a corset. These take time to make and are fitted for the body wearing it. At this point, I had already developed a boning made of plastic bags.

I had now come to a final mood board centered around slow fashion with the additional influence of Mike Kelley’s work and Mary, who was Jesus connection to the natural world.I ended up using some muslin I intended to dry but instead got permanently pleated, a happy mistake, as the bottom. For the shoot, I wanted to use the plastic bags that had red fabrics in them since they were not used for the garment. I decided to put tights on the models top and legs as a way of taking the focus away from the body, thus, making the model an alien thing. I think I would like to sew the garment and top tights together eventually, but logistically it worked better for the shoot to have them just put on as a separate entity. I also chose to color the photos some variation on red, white, and blue as a subtle nod to American and western consumerism. In addition to adding some elements like halos as an allegory to Mary.

A few unedited photos.
