“I believe the staying power of male tailoring shows how visual form can have its own authority, its own self-perpetuating symbolic and emotional; force. This is a modern belief; and the very way modern suits look expresses the though. It is expounded by their intrinsically abstract formal character, together with their abiding evolutionary character- their look of looking like themselves, even while their style keeps slightly changing. “

I was looking at advertisements by Chloe. I chose an ad where there are two different silhouettes . This advertisement portrays a blend of masculine and feminine gender. The models are wearing a dress and a pant suit with a halter. The dress on the left is full of movement and the model has a very carefree pose. It portrays and reinforces traditional women’s gender norms since the model is very feminine and the dress is elegant. The dress is considered women’s wear. On the right the model is still very feminine however the clothing is a blend of the male tailoring such as described in Susan Kaiser quote above. The print is blue and underneath is a pantsuit with very feminine halter design. The silhouette and the models pose expresses more of a masculine feel. Even though the print a color it’s not exactly men’s wear however the structure and elements of the design expresses more of a masculine feel. The overall advertisement I would say reinforces gender with only slight detail of the design of the suit that subverts the gender norms
