Museum of The City of New York

Our visit as a class to this museum was very interesting and I highlighted how sustainable homes affect a community. We took the 5 train uptown  and got off a couple blocks away. The walk was only about 5 minutes and to my surprise the museum was across the street from Central Park. The building itself stands out and the inside is a surprising mix of modern and more classical style. The room we were required to visit held large screens and interactive art pieces where any one of us could be displayed in other peoples neighborhoods. First I started by creating my own apartment building. there were meters at the top of the screen that showed my effectiveness in affordability, sustainability, and housing capacity. After playing around I was able to figure out that while a reinforced would was sustainable it was not cost effective enough to house many people. Instead I found that brick and solar panels were the most effective in housing people and being affordable. The next of the interactive pieces was the one where people could stand in front of a large screen displaying apartments such as mine and allowing people to be put into the screen. I felt that this piece wasn’t very helpful in the narrative of sustainability or anything but did serve as a fun and playful way to experience peoples unique creations. There was also videos being displayed as well as many other large screens displaying maps including information on the areas the depicted. Overall my Trip the Museum of New York was a fun way to go somewhere Ive never been. I would have liked to see more on sustainability in the form of information that would stick with me better. I thought the exhibit was thoughtful but didn’t have a lasting impact on my knowledge of sustainable systems.
