LP POST #3

After my interview with Meihan Hu, I realized that her choices of clothing has more to do with functionality and comfort as her themes than picking a certain style of the day. In an unfamiliar situation, Meihan would dress herself to “not stand out” and depending on who she meeting up with, her choice clothing would be appropriated for them. Entiwistle discuses the relationship of body, dress and place and how “individuals manage their bodies in concrete settings– on the street, bars, restaurants, asylums and hospitals,”(139).  The clothes Meihan wear, depends on the people she’s meeting, location and the weather. Depending on the relationship she has with the person, she would wear clothes that would make her feel comfortable with them. As Entwsitle stated, ” Dress is the way in which individuals learn to live in their bodies and feel at home in them. Wearing the right clothes and looking our best, we feel at ease with our body, and the opposite is true also: turning up for a situation inappropriately dressed, we feel ill at ease in our bodies, out of place and vulnerable,” (139) and this is true because if Meihan is meeting someone someone she is not familiar with, then she would dress to not stand out. Her daily dress practice is similar to how I chose to dress myself. I do choose my clothing base on the weather, place and who I will be seeing but it is more focus on my mood than compared to Meihan, where as she has more focus on functionality of the garments. However, with the both of us, place/space usually have the most impact on choosing dress and the effect it has and our how our nationality unconsciously shows through dress/style/body. For Meihan, she style is heavily influenced by Chinese streetwear culture, where as I growing up in Korean and the States, have influences from both East and West.
