Sustainable Systems – Final Learning Portfolio

Field Action Notebook Summary

The field action note book helped me change the way I live in a positive way and also helped the environment.

I started by taking shorter showers and recycling. What helped me take shorter showers was music. When I was ready to shower, I would play the song and when the song ended, I would get out. The songs would 3 to 5 minutes long.

After keeping notes on my phone about what I was eating I also realized the impact of what I was eating on a daily basis. I decided to become a vegetarian for a week and I found my spending was less and I noticed changes in my overall health. I found a change in my mood from when I used to eat fatty animal processed products.

Project 1: Food Energy Map

For this project I took an item from my field action log and tracked its journey from production to the consumer. My first map was hand drwn and then I changed it to make it easier to read by using icons in illustrator. I hope it is better to understand now.

Project 2: Sustainable Intervention

For our second project we had to choose a system to change. I chose the dairy industry, specifically the cheese industry. I made a campaign call “Don’t be cheesy” and the idea was to change the consumers behaviour by giving them a choice to choose cheese that had a smaller carbon footprint. From feedback from my presentation I found out that this may not work and that the campaign should involve having the stickers on cheese products so the buyer will decide not to buy it.

Project 3: Board Game – Monopoly 2050 – Floodopoly

For this project our recreation was called “Floodopoly”. I had to recreate a monopoly board game pieces for my group. We wanted to create a fun experience and also teach people about sustainability and the issues facing New York. To research we found burrows of NYC over the next 100 years. From this we took the most and least dangerous places to figure out the prices. I enjoyed making this game and I learned a lot in the process.
