Artist Statement

My name is Yessica Choi, I am a junior in the BFA Fashion program in Parsons. I was born in Korea, however, went to few different places since I was young. When I had any chances to go outside of my country, I always took the chance. I just loved traveling and experiencing different cultures and studying abroad in a new environment. As I spend most of my childhood outside of my country, I grew up as a diverse person. Not every moments were full of joy and happiness, however, it was valuable and appreciating moments as I look back. I learned how to compromise with the situation around me. Between people, situation, school, and etc. All the hardships allowed me to grow up as a strong person.

I love to play with knotting things, such as ribbons. As the pictures show, I have some different garments that have things tied together. In addition, I love to play with silhouettes, more of an oversized than a body-tight silhouette. Also I love pastel color, which gives me sense of joy, happiness, and it creates a positive atmosphere around me. Pastel colors are something that always on my mind. I like to work with materials or fabrics that are thicker, or stiffer than a soft, light and sheer fabrics. The reason why I like to play with thicker fabrics is because I can play with the silhouettes more than concentrating on the ruffles, details, and just simply how the fabric flows. I like to have my work on more in geometric shapes. On the other hand, working with sheer, light fabrics are my weakest side of me. I don’t feel comfortable working with those materials. I also like simple, unique cuts and details that a garment has. When I start to make something, or decide to make something, I usually have an idea of what details I want to put on. So I find inspirations with visual images. I try to gather lots of different photos with similar details. Then I either combine them to create a new one, or start of my own.

Looking forward, I want to be a designer who is well known for playing with the silhouettes, using mellow colors. Simple, but unique details such as cuts, pockets, and finishings, along with geometric shapes.
