Project 2 – Public Installation

Overview

We were assigned to do a public installation in our chosen location in the University Center for Project 2. Our team choose to do our installation on third floor by the stairs. We started out with planning and experimenting with our materials .

Vehicles from the street passed by the window and became part of the installation. Our group focused on the engagement with public for our ideas.

Our team started with ideation and making models. The first idea that we had was to build an electric train out of coil and electric field powered battery. The kinetic movements can be seen from interior and also outside of the street.  After few attempts of the construction, the battery did not run smoothly as expected in the coil. Due to the time constraint, we had to give up on our first idea.

Later on we came up with the idea of making rectangular 3D shapes and using the angle to gather lights from the celling light into one spot, in order to attract attention from the street during the night. The second idea was turned down due to fire safety concerns.

Final idea: We combined the shapes on the street and shapes that we can see from the reflection of the window. Put mylar pieces at the area where the exterior shapes and interior shapes overlapped. In this way that the audiences from the inside of the building see their reflection from mylar pieces while they look at the window. The people pass by those windows seems like a pictorial animation from the street. At the same time mylar pieces reflect lights from the outside. The windows and the reflected pieces engage the exterior and interior view with each other.
