Laser / Metal Blog Entry

screen-shot-2016-09-28-at-11-20-13-pmAn explanatory text of what it does and how it works
The water flow from the higher level of this strcuture, and trigger the water turbine to starts its spinning motion. Three gears are attached on each side of the water turbine, their mechanism is triggered by the kinetic from the water flow. When the water gets to the end of the cycle, it gets bring back to the top level of the structure by using a water pump.

A list of parts

1.Large container
2. Small container
3.Metal sheet for plasma cut into stand
4.6V- 12V water pump
5. 9V battery
10.Wooden stick/ stand for support of water pump
11. 3D printed water turbine (thingverse http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:462414)
12. Laser cut supports and gears

What were your inspirations?
I started looking at Theo Jansen’s walking creature and was inspired by the idea of the creation that moves on its on.

What did you intend?
I intended to create a piece of kinetic art trigger by the force from water flow.

What research did you have to do?
I looked into many artists who have produced kinetic art and seek for all possible kinds of inspiration, in addition to many examples from youtube and behance.

Artists for example:

Theo Jansen
Tom Shannon
George Rickey
Alexander Calder
Tim Hawkinson
Reuben Margonlin

How did the deliverable match (or not) your goals?
The water part works very well, the water flow was exactly enough to trigger the mechanism.

What new things (about process, materials, etc.) did you learn?
Getting more understanding about the process of fabrication, which will help me see more possibility for my future design.

What rework did you do? How? Why?
I readjust the angel of the water pump tube. Mainly because the projectile from the tube varies from the amount of water in the tank. In addition, when I was cutting gears, the acrylic never cut through the first time. When I assemble all parts together, they tend to break very easily, at the end I have to change the plan for the design.

What would you do differently in your future builds?
Make all the parts more accurate so it reduce the risk of running into technical issues.
