My name is Yiko, I was born in Southern China and raised in Cupertino, California. I am a BAFA student working towards B.F.A Design and Technology, and B.A Interdisciplinary Science. I mainly focus on interaction design and working towards environmental/public health researches. Design and Technology mainly work with creative coding and physical computing. I strictly follow the value of minimalism when it comes to design. I believe that minimalistic objects reduce unnecessary elements and simplify environments that we perceived.
The rationale for my works usually evolves arounds users. I use design as a tool to help the audiences most of the time. I came into design understanding that the discipline is able to have influence toward broader audiences. As technology keep on advancing as our society develops, there are endless possibility in how we employed the technology into our life. From this leverage point that it leads to my goal of combining technology with design in order to approach more audiences.
Most of my projects in school are exercises of creating interactive mechanism. Our major curriculum is designed to mature our knowledge for how to employ technical skills to achieve user centered purposes design. In most cases I start researching into existing issues around our environment, community, etc. From the problems I discovered, I brainstorm about design ideas that can introduce a new way for users to interact with community, information, objects, system, etc. One example of what I do will be the second project image that I attached to this post. It is an IoT(Internet of Things) project that I created in countryside Japan for an elderly dominated community. My teammates and I realized the depopulation issues in the town while we were staying. We decided to create a new user interface to encourage interaction between foreign tourists and local residences.The design object creates possible solution to improve demographic of the town.
I am looking forward to pursue a career as interactive designer for global company as my education prepares me for job. In order to apply my design philosophy further in established companies that are aiming for social goods.
