Personal goals for Thesis 2

My personal goal for thesis 2 is to research and development a working prototype that demonstrates my research outcome/ progress. The final deliverable should be a body of work that fully showcase a solid concept that is meaningful to the field of Design, Technology, and Science. This research is meant to continue after this course ends by Spring semester 2019. I have been having profoundly interested in the field of using design augmenting the current experience of science communication. I would like to pursue my future career in the relevance of such topic in some format. I would like to submit this research work to conferences (Siggraph, TEI, etc) and expand on my networking in the field to meet with some of the pioneers in the field. It is for the continuous researching plan to be carried on afterward. To conclude, this thesis should be a working prototype that showcases the progress of this research field that I want to join and make an impact.

Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats Analysis

Strengths The research area is currently a relatively urgent challenge in science communication and data accessibility domain. There are various social challenges raised amongst the friction between politics, policymaking, economics benefits to science.(See next question for specification). The design in this larger concept map should be created as a tool to leverage and bring resilience into current systems, and potentially nudge.
Weaknesses There is a large scope of researches involved coming from different fields. There are multiple obstacles to be overcome before I am able to translate the cloud of information into a user interface that is relevant to the users.
Opportunities User engagement can be strengthened based on the content redesigned and how the problem is framed, so that it would be more relevant to audiences’ everyday life, instead of presenting the outcome as another abstracted piece of scientific information that seems out of reach for the majority of the population
Threats The scope of this project touches on many other fields that involve interdisciplinary background to organize. For example, I have looked into Energy and Sustainability, Environmental Psychology, Human Information Interaction, and articles relating to government policies regarding the joint discussion of the previous field mentioned. The nature of the field is abstract and complex. On the contrary, the goal of this project is to sort the core message of the research findings and deliver it through an interface that conveys the message across to the audiences. The two ends of the spectrum are rather far apart from each other, there are risks of not being able to simplify the subject matter enough for general audiences by the end of the semester.

Areas of assistance

Content, usability, information translation, information architecture, technical building, user engagement

Thesis focus

The focus of my thesis research is to use interactive design to augment the current experience of science communication and the data accessibility challenges that are relevant to the field. The goal for the form is to leverage the interactivity of digital interface and use the media as a tool to help users with understanding subject matter involving complex data. To potentially recreate the experience of science information exposure by redesigning how the current environmental challenges are being framed.
