Time Embodied second video project – Maendeul Maendeul

Maendeul Maendeul is a made up Korean word for ‘to make’. The first time I encountered the word, I was very struck and I thought it had such a nice ring to it ( I have a tendency to like a word for a while).  Also because everything about the video is very close to me, I thought I would name it Maendeul Maendeul.

This video is about two people talking about life after death and through this they realize how living is important. The video begins with a girl asking a boy, about his preference to become a new person/thing if he could live again after his death. He takes the question casually by answering her that he wants to be an animal in the sea. He doesn’t like the surrounding environment and we can see that he is not a sociable person (he does not like people). Then she questions him about what is important in his current life and they both realizes how every memories, experiences and their passion are very valuable to them. The Video ends up with a sky scene with two people talking about the subject more specifically  in Korean which makes the audiences question about it (because they don’t speak Korean). This was intentional because first, to make it more personal to me and to make the audience realize that it’s very personal to the person who made the video.

I wanted to link this video to the last one I made so I used the subject, ‘Death’ and ‘After death’. The first video was about suicide and the girl mourning for his death and him haunting her through out the years. This video also deals with death but I wanted this project to be more romantic, soft and calm. The bond and support from two people gives the feeling of happiness and stability but the subject they are dealing with and the sense of emptiness adds sadness, vagueness and dreamlike feeling to the video. To add to the mood, I focused on the words used, the color of each scenes and scene transitions. The purple is my favorite color and the unsaturated color adds to the mood. For scene transitions, I used dissolve which is calming and smooth.
