Body by Extension

From a measuring analysis of the self body to a digital torso model, the tension and compression of the overlayers among the body are being studied and observed. Through both physical and digital practice of smocking, ideas start to conjugate and assimilate unexpected outcomes. Under a particular motion, a style or aesthetic is articulated and defined.

Self-reflection/ Self-assessment

<Body by Extension> is an inspiring project that connects the physicality of making with the digitalization of brainstorming. It’s a well conjugation of reality and the efficient extension above and beyond. The outcome and exploring process exceeded my expectation because I was able to augment and accentuate my creative vision in a digitalized world much more fluently and in time. Whatever that took a long time to achieve in actual physicality, it took only a few hours in Rhino. Moreover, it allowed me to have the time to do many tryouts before I could decide on which one is the most exciting one. I felt the entire process to be really exciting as I explored different options for an initial design drive. I tried my best to make the rigid and boring into something organic and fun digitally. For stuff that I can improve, I think I should gain more fluent and solid skills in handling details through Rhino. The model I created was still based on “surfaces”, for 3d printing purposes I would definitely like to elaborate on the details more and make them into printable “meshes” or “solids”.
