In response to the NYCB 2018 Romeo and Juliet production, I decided to redesign the set. Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet is set in 14th century Verona, Italy. Since the set lacked color and reference to Italian architecture, I created a set that was attentive to the time period and location. In the 14th century, Romanesque and Gothic were the most popular styles of architecture in Verona. The structures were “[of] massive quality, [and] had thick walls, round arches, sturdy pillars, barrel vaults, large towers and decorative arcading”. The city Verona specifically is known for its brightly-colored buildings, which is what I implemented into my own design.
In my redesign of the Romeo and Juliet set, there are two pieces: Juliet’s balcony and the general setting of the Capulet home. Juliet’s balcony is a large peachy-pink colored tower with a spiral staircase cascading from the back to the front. The general setting of the Capulet home has fourteen round arches and two levels (seven arches per level), two stairs from the sides, and skinny metal railings.
