BENCH+

BENCH+ is a public seating project in Brooklyn Bridge Park. It is a multi-piece set for lounging, casual dining, and play. I wanted to create a space for community gathering that can cater to the community’s outdoor needs. The project was largely inspired by Risa Puno’s Common Picnic project and the Build Studio class in Parsons.

The John Street section of Brooklyn Bridge Park

Brooklyn Bridge Park is a park with three main views: the Manhattan Bridge, the Brooklyn Bridge, and the skyline of the east side of Manhattan.

BENCH+ would be a great addition to the playfulness of the park. It is ideal for picnics, reading, or lounging.

Color of the seating complements the stone of the Brooklyn Bridge.

Materials: Finished Pine Wood, Steel Slotted Decorative Rounded Head Screws

  • Pine is one of the cheapest hardwoods, and locally grown.
  • Manufacturers are nearby in Brooklyn, New Jersey, and Upstate New York.
  • Single modules can be manufactured then brought onto site for final arrangement.
  • Wooden panels joined together by wood screws would be used to create a hollow pentagonal box.
  • Single Modules are assembled by manufacturers, and can be brought on site to finish the larger seating area.
  • Future maintenance would include reapplication of water resistant finish and replacement of non-corrosive screws.
  • Budget: Approximately $10,000 – $20,000
