Echo

Echo (2018)

For the midterm for Architectural Design Studio 1, I was tasked to choose a component and ultimately turn into an interesting piece of architecture. In response, I began with this obsession of the geometric, folded object. I created many different iterations, experimented with different material, and finally settled on a shell. A geometric shell comprised of two of the same folded component.

My project emphasizes the relationship between space and sound. In this design, I consider the maximization of space, as well as the movement of body and sound. It was inspired by the Greek myth of Echo, where Hera cursed her voice to repeat words said to her. The geometric shell structure ricochets sound until it is released out the opening of the mouth. Ideally, the space will be used for an outdoor concert hall.

People circulate starting from the west and east sides of the first floor, walk down the triangular slopes into the “hole”, and disperse throughout the ground floor.
