This Changes Everything Reflection

This Changes Everything is a great documentary that talks about and confronts the crisis of climate change from many points of views. The film shows many different people and places struggles and ideas about climate change. One example I really liked was when it showed a couple who organized a fossil fuel extraction in their local river basin, and then they teamed up with a tribe to try and bring solar power to the reservation. The film heavily focuses on stories of human connection to the earth, people who have control of certain land, and how people make use of the land. Part of the film focused on the terrible effects of climate change from the point of view of those on the northeast coast who suffered through Hurricane Sandy. A big issue was the economic crisis in Greece in the early 2000s, where some people saw the only solution to get out of the crisis was to sell off the land to the highest bidder, often those highest bidders are resource extraction companies that are causing environmental havoc contributing to climate change. Climate change, of course, can be caused by everyday human use such as plastic and production, but this made it clear that capitalism is the real big issue. Large corporations and companies showing disregard for the earth are causing the bulk of the problem. A lot of people dislike watching films and informational videos about climate change because they seem preachy and threatening, not inspiring. This film was less about scaring people about the threats of climate change and more about showing empowering stories and examples of people taking action across the whole world. I think that it opened my eyes and showed that taking action can happen in many different ways that I had not thought of before.
