Narrative Photo Montage

For this assignment, I chose a narrative which was ‘Alice in Wonderland.’ We were asked to use our analog skills in the form of watercolour drawing and digital skills to create a composition on adobe photoshop. I chose alice in wonderland because as a kid when i heard it i was fascinated by the story and the transformations she went through but when I grew up I started relating it to how the author must be on drugs and wrote this book out of his imagination of wonderland he must have experienced.

Watercolour drawing

I made the rabbit because it was an important part of the book and the movie and so I wanted to include him in the photo montage. Being someone who hasn’t done a lot of watercolour drawing I think it was an amazing experience to try shading through watercolours.

Found photos

I found pictures that would help me fulfil my thought of making a psychedelic photo montage. I used mushrooms because it is a drug but also an important feature in the movie and the book. I used a colourful background to create a very trippy effect. I used various tools from photoshop such as those from the adjustment layers or blending tools to get the kind of effect I needed for my piece. I used gradients and pictures of various transparencies to create a multicoloured look.

Final Photo Montage

I am glad how the picture turned out because I wanted to make a picture that made no sense just like the wonderland of alice and I think I was quite there by playing around with adjustment tools and placing characters upside down or increasing or decreasing the size of objects. Overall I think this project was very interesting as I have never made a piece like this or used as many tools as photoshop.
