Bridge 4: Final Interventions

For this final assignment, we were supposed to combine bridge 2 and 3 and come up with an intervention for the problem we had identified in our areas. My chosen area was Jackson heights and the problem I identified was that the area has none to less open, green and public spaces and my intervention focused on creating a space that was a combination of open, public and green space.

Research Questions:

What do you need to design?

A vertical park/public space building.

What is the nature?

It is a six story building made out of bricks and glass to give it a feeling of a park and a public space. It will have elevators and restrooms on each floor. The first floor will contain movie theatres, second will be an indoor park for kids outlined by glass wall, third will be a restaurant which will contain foods of different cuisines  ( since Jackson heights is filled with various ethnicities ), fourth will be a virtual reality parlour outlined by a glass wall, fifth will be karaoke/ indoor games parlour (bowling, arcade games), sixth would be an open terrace space with half area containing green house plants and the other half would be a hammock garden.

Who is it for?

It is targeted for an audience of all ages from kids to elderly people.

Why is it needed?

Jackson heights has none to less places for the residents or tourists to hangout. This vertical park/public space will bring out publicity and tourists to the area and give the residents a place where a person of every age can hangout.

What are it’s benefits?

It creates a mental safety for parents to leave their kids in the building park. It will give the residents a chance to hangout in a space other than 34th Ave. It will bring out different ethnicities together in an enclosed space. The small green house space will let plant enthusiasts to find a reason to visit this space and the hammock garden would become a good space for people to relax under the sky. Since there are no theatres around, the building will a delight for movie lovers.

Why is it interesting?

It is interesting because it will bring a good kind of disruption into the area or a good kind of place where the residents can hangout since it is not the traditional kind of park/public space which will create curosity in people to visit the area often.

What will you bring to it?

I will bring to an asthetic which is similar to the layout of the city but also make it unique since the building has brick and glass walls. This kind of design will bring a sense of mordern look to this city.

How will you proceed?

I will proceed by sketching and modelling different floors and layout of the building followed by looking for the kinds of materials which can be used to make the building out of more sustainable materials.

Pitch

I am investigating on how a public or open space can be accommodated in a planned or cramped up and developed space such as Jackson Heights. I will be designing a building that functions as a public and open space and has spaces for recreational activities such as watching movies in theatre or a place for kids. This design will be a good alternative for neighbourhoods that do not have a lot of green space or public space.

Material Investigation

Wood: Used for flooring, construction of the building frame, resistant to electrical current,
Recycled glass: Sustainable option to create glass walls for each floor. This can be turned into countertops, flooring, tiles. It can also be used in fiberglass insulation for buildings.
Recycled Plastic: Another sustainable method to make objects such as chairs, plastic slides for indoor kids playground. This material is tough and has a resistance to moisture.
Cotton/Nylon: Durable and weather proof to make hammocks. Both of them are stretchable but nylon ropes are used for absorbing shock loads and has good resistance to abrasion.

Leather: This material would be used to make chairs for the movie theater and the chairs for the restaurant. It can be cleaned easily but isn’t quite durable.
Microfiber: Chair covers for cinema seats and chairs of the restaurant. Generally used on sofas available in house furnishing. It’s cost friendly, stain resistant, can be cleaned easily. The tight weave also makes it resistant to pet claws. Available in a wide colors in the market.
Bricks: It is made from clay and it’s burned at high temperature which makes it capable to withstand severe weathering conditions. It can be cut in various shapes and sizes and is available in a variety of color. It is highly durable.

MODEL:

Overall I think this project helped me understand the design process of coming up with a solution through various exporations using SCAMPER method and model making techniques.
