Intention

My main goal was to be able to keep my hand wraps flat and I wanted to found away to keep them untangled. I found this experience to be one in which required searching for the best material in effort to complete it in the best way. I spent time playing with different shapes for the boxing wrap holder to be because I wanted to know which way would best hold the wraps as well as being strong. I found the plastic material to be very strong because of it was rather challenging to bend it. I ended up being able to use rubber bands to allow it to be strong as well as being able to keep it together. After going through this process I came to the conclusion that the plastics, however were strong. I found that they were easily crushed in my bag.  I ended up using wood to create the piece to ensure that the piece keeps from being destroyed.

EXPLORATION:

Describe what YES feels like in your body. Describe what NO feels like.

The experience at this gym can be one at times that can feel very packed and rather overwhelming. A 7pm class vs 12:30pm class can be very different in terms of the amount of people in the space. It is often more effective to use piece to wrap my hands during these times of rush because it allows me to confine myself to a smaller space, when there are so many people around me. It often allows you to feel more blended in the space that can feel overcrowded. But, at times this can be a positive in that you can always find familiar face of someone who has been in the gym with you before.

What feels pedestrian on the site? What is on an edge of possibility for you beyond pedestrian?

It feels empowering to be on site especially as a women. The reason being is that you begin to feel as though you can do anything. When you are women, there are often ideas that brought up that you are not good enough or men are stronger than you. I believe that women can gain as power as a man, and I feel that boxing has allowed me to gain connection with my body that I hadn’t had before.

Connection to  The Hand: How Its Use Shapes the Brain, Language, and Human Culture by Frank Wilson

This book is connected to my project in that I have been able to create a piece that will allow my experience with my hands to be more effective. Creating this wooden piece has allowed me to go further in deep with our hands are essential in our creative process.

Process (Paper Prototype)

  1. Roll Paper into small log shape pieces of various lengths

Process (Cardboard Prototype)

  1. Cut board into a rectangular shape
  2. Bend the cardboard, so the sides are in the shape of a triangle
  3. Cut a piece of wire and continuously wrap it around until it stays together
  4. Next take a second piece of wire, and make a loop. This loop should be big enough to fit the wrap in.

Process (Plastic Prototype)

  1. Cut the large plastic sheet into a rectangular shape
  2. Bend the plastic, then take rubber bands and as many needed to hold it together.
  3. Take the pink glitter paper, and cut a piece that fits around the entirety of the plastic. Then glue it to the piece. Allow the glue t0 dry for at least 15 minutes before proceeding to step 4
  4. Take piece of wire and weave it on the inside of the plastic.
  5. Next, take an additional rubber band, and braid in with the wire. The rubber band should have enough give to be to stretch out in effort to put the wrap in it.

Process (Final Wood)

  1. I drew marks on the Baltic Birch Plywood (1/4″x16″x24″) that were 5 1/2 inches in length and two inches in width
  2. I then cut the wood into strips
  3. I then went on to glue the wood together and I waited 2 days for it to dry.
  4. Then I then took the wood and drew a shape that would be big enough to weave a boxing wrap into the hole and then cut out the whole
  5. (optional) I then sanded the sides of it down, in effort to make sure that the ends of the piece would not be be to pointy.
