Embodied Lessons

Throughout this process I have begun to realize how tough it can be working with fabric and how you have to pay attention what you are using, in that the choosing of wrong material can lead to many errors and wholes in the experience. I think that one of the main things I learned from this experience is how to really dive into the unknown as hard as it can be sometimes. I have never worked with fabric before in effort to make a shirt.

Why I chose Lace and Spandex

I chose to work with lace and spandex for a variety of reasons. But, I chose to work with spandex because I felt as though it would be a comfortable material as well as a material that would allow one to be able to stretch when working. I decided to work with lace because I enjoyed the textures of it and when I am covered charcoal I often find grains of it on my clothes, and I thought it would be symbolic of that.

Book Influences

The Hand: How Its Use Shapes the Brain, Language, and Human Culture by Frank Wilson is a book that discusses the profound meaning behind having hands and how they allow us to make the work we make. As I was working on this project, I would continuously poke my hands with the needles and I kept thinking about how important it is that I have skin that protects me from any further damage to myself.
