Marroko Elementary School

The school is meant to be built by the community for the community. Simplistic fo rms and modularity dictate the shape of the school. Each part of the school is designed to instill a sense of community for the students through courtyards. Those entering the school are faced with the “Communal Courtyard”- where the administration and spaces designated for the community as well as students. These spaces include the library, workshops areas and one of the science rooms for future continuing education for adults in the community. The cafeteria which opens itself with horizontal bi-folding doors in a performance space facing the communal courtyard is the divider between the activities of visitors and those strictly for the school. A ring of classrooms and the remainder science rooms form the “Educational Courtyard.“ Each double-classroom is shifted so to allow corner sunlight and create moments that allow for informal learning in the outdoor seating between the classrooms. Following the courtyard sequence is the “Living Courtyard.” The two U-shaped dormitory blocks form two smaller areas within one enclosed complex. Continuous awnings and overhanging roofs offer protection against direct sunlight and rain. They act as a corridor, as a covered outdoor area, as a gathering space and continuity between programs. The supports for the roofs double as informal seating.
