Semester-Long Project

Plastics I come across in my daily life

  1. Starbucks cold cup and straw
  2. Fiji water bottle
  3. Acne Studios tote bag
  4. Lighter
  5. Givenchy slides
  6. Shaving machine

When I order a coffee from Starbucks, the barista puts my order inside a plastic cup, and I also receive a straw if it’s a cold coffee. I use this kind of plastic every single day at least once because I buy coffee from Starbucks sometimes twice a day. I use the cup for approximately thirty minutes to one hour. After I drink my coffee, I trash the cup. There is some environmentally better alternative for Starbucks cup. The company allows its customers to bring their reusable water bottles. I don’t prefer that because I don’t want to carry the bottle around with me afterward.

I use Fiji plastic water bottles every day because I can’t drink tap water. Fiji delivers me water supply twice a month. I use a bottle per day, and I mostly finish my usage with a bottle of water in two to three hours. I recycle the water bottle when there is no more liquid to drink. The better alternative for plastic water bottles would also get a reusable glass bottle, but I don’t prefer that with the same reason above.

Last year, I bought a tote bag from Acne Studios which is made of plastic. I paid around 500 dollars for it. I use the bag to carry my stuff around. I use the bag when it styles well with what I’m wearing. An appropriate number would be 5-6 times a year because it is not a very functional bag. I still own the bag. A better alternative would be getting a leather bag because this plastic bag undoubtedly doesn’t worth its price.

I use lighter to light my cigarettes when I’m smoking. I use different lighters every day. A good quality lighter would be useful for three months, but I mostly lose them and have to get a new one. If the lighter is entirely useless, I trash it. The better alternative for a standard plastic lighter is a Zippo lighter. I also own a Zippo lighter, but I don’t use it as much as regular lighters because it has a meaning for me and lighters are so easy to lose.

I bought black logo slides from Givenchy when I went to Milan in 2017. I paid around 395 euros to get them. I use those slides during summertime when I go to happy hours and swimming. During summer, I use the slides three-four times a week. I think I will be able to use the slides for several more years because it has good quality. A better alternative would get a slide with an environmentally friendly material, but I like the way plastic slides look on people.

I use the shaving machine to trim my beard. I use it every Sunday morning once a week. I bought it last year, and it still works perfectly. If it stops working, I would probably give it to my father to get it fixed because it was an expensive shaving machine. I don’t think there would be a better environmental friendly alternative for this kind of, but it could be made without using any plastic.
