Plastic bag project: Sustainable systems

Item: Pencil Pouch

How it was created: I created this pencil pouch because many of the pencil pouches I’ve had in the past were either too bulky or too flimsy. This pencil pouch is lightweight, yet extremely durable. To start off I decided to weave heavy duty clear plastic bags in order to have a tight, thick base for the pouch. To do so I also used string, that can be removed from the plastic by cutting or seam ripping. After i had a large enough rectangle of weaving created I tied off all the ends. I had a pile of fabric from a previous assignment in my closet and decided to line the inside of the bag to give it an extra layer of protection so the plastic wouldn’t rip. Lastly i had hair ties and buttons lying around and decided to make a way for the bag to be able to be closed so the contents wouldn’t spill out. For the photos I added some of the common tools I take to class on a daily basis such as pens, pencils, x-acto knife and scissors.

Concepts learned: I learned how to create something out of materials that are usually thrown away, and how to make something that is durable and can be used for years rather than just thrown away or forgotten.
