IDU Bag & Planter

For our final in community supported textiles, the class had to come up with a DIY sustainable product. We decided on baggies that could become planters. We discussed the ideas of adding a drawstring but when we got to our prototyping stage we realized the materials would be to thick to properly bunch in and out with ease. Two students we are illustration majors started on the logo tag and the rest of  the class, started collecting scrap canvas for the final iteration, in order to repurpose. We took them home and everyone came up with their own design to bring to class the following week. Later in class we coated them with beeswax to make them water resistant. Amanda and I were the only girls in class that new how to sew, so prototyped a simple pattern. We flipped the middle of the canvas, and then again under itself to form a base, and made sure to include the tag. Later we decided to attach the logo tag to avoid adding safety pins. We stitches ran over each side twice to make sure they were secure. The majority of the class liked the edges raw (coated in wax) so we left them untouched. We each sewed 9 bags to bring into class for our final. In class I flipped the edges in and then back out (to make for a short planter), the class ended up following in the same direction to complete them.
