Intro to Fashion Studies: LP Post #4

For the Intro to Fashion studies lecture/recitation, we were asked to visit the Pierre Cardin exhibition at the Brooklyn Museum. The Future Fashion exhibit is a large retrospective that embodies an archive. The long career of Cardin is presented in a very unique display which seems to be based on the designer’s bold, futuristic aesthetic. The objects on display include haute couture, accessories, furniture, lighting, illustrations, excerpts from film media and even personal images. These objects are both historical and contemporary and as Pierre Cardin was known to look into the future, the historical ones imagine what it will look like and feel like years from the time they were created.

This Cardin look really intrigued me. The hat and dress are both very symmetrical and geometric in their style. It feels the Mod stylings of the future are envisioned. I believe Pierre Cardin designed this long before other similar Mod stylings appeared on runways. His influence in those was very evident in the geometry, unpredictable silhouette and futuristic feel that many designer’s more recent collections have. Louis Vuitton did geometric figures with checks and stripes only ins Spring/Summer 2013. The architectural tact with color-blocking indicates a very refined clean-cut look which I believe embraces futuristic design as a whole.
