Central Park – Post Cards

These are the postcards I created based on my experience at Central Park. What struck me most during my visit was the amount of nature there. I didn’t realize there was so much variety of wildlife and plantlife in NYC before walking around the park, which I’d never really done before this assignment. This is why I chose to feature animals and plants on my post cards. I chose to draw a dog off its leash, running in front of a sign that indicated dogs weren’t allowed to run off their leashes in the park, because this is something I continuously saw while I was there that made me laugh. For the second postcard, I chose to illustrate a variety of the wildlife I encountered while in the park because I never expected to encounter so much in the city. And for the third postcard, I illustrated leaves that have changed colors for autumn because I’d never seen the leaves change before. This is the only of my postcards that have any sort of border around its edges, and I did so to suggest the idea of “confinement,” since Central Park is confined to only the manmade center of Manhattan, and this is really the only place a person can see the effects of the seasons changing. It also features a pun about autumn because I’m the worst.

Here is a process photo of the page of a sketchbook I used when I was trying to figure out how I wanted to design the postcards, text, and illustrations:
