Time: Collage

My collage assignment was inspired mostly by religion and how society has grown and changed over time. As I attended an all-boys Catholic High School, religion used to be a big part of my daily life. This is what drew the inspiration of the women in the top let corner. The three are meant to represent the holy trinity gone wrong as the American Flag is a direct connection to the crucifix. This was due to the commonly said fallacy “America, love it or leave it.” I used these three opposite representations of religious figures to represent how religion has grown less important in our society as more people turn to science. The figure to the right shows a hand plucking a woman dressed in vintage clothes meant to show the doing away with the past and stepping into the future. The coffee mug mark is a visual representation of the quote “I have measured out my life with coffee spoons” from a poem called “The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock” by T. S. Eliot. This poem is a story of growing old and the ways in which Prufrock tracks it. The woman in the bottom left corner communicates the growing selfishness of our society. Her enlarged head focused in the center of the solar systems is a mockery of the cliché “the world doesn’t revolve around you.” Next, the women in black on the bottom of the image suggests modern marriage. White used to be worn on wedding days to show purity in the bride. However, its more common for people to not practice abstinence in modern day. Thus, she is show wearing black. The birthday candles next to her document the growing of age and the past birthdays tallying up. Finally, the background images seen are abandoned structures. This shows the passing of time as the buildings are overcome by plants and rubble but desolate otherwise.
