Self portrait in wire – Space/ Materiality

Growing up, I lived in a cuban house hold with both hispanic and American points of view. My mother’s family came to the U.S. in the late 60s and grew accustomed to the American lifestyle. However, my father’s side of the family, came much later and are still staying true to hispanic culture. Everyone has always known that my dream was to live in New York and study fashion design, but my dads side of the family wanted me to stay in miami to be closer to the family which is usually what hispanic families do. On the other hand, my mother’s family was more encouraging as to leaving to New York and searching for my “American dream.”

This self portrait in wire represents the stress that I had when making my decision for college due to the  two different opinions in my family. The face is blank with no expression to represent how I dealt with the stress. I basically kept it to myself. The tangled and chaotic wire is representative of my mind and how I felt inside my mind. Another factor that added to my stress was my financial situation with paying tuition and looking for a place to stay in New York. The overall piece is representative of my experience in making the first big decision for my career and how my culture background influenced that process.
