Learning Portfolio Post #4

I especially love this bustle since I was amazed by its consideration of body movements. The designer was not listed especially. However, I believe that according to years of fashion movement, the bustle must have developed into variation for different occasions, ages, height, modernity, and classes.

From my prior knowledge of corsets and tutu, I had the images of horizontally spiraled boning structures. However, this one angles the boning in order to be flexible when women sit and stand. Besides easing the movement, the cross boning also gives a more delicate, smooth, curvy silhouette of female’s back. The contrast created by the butt exaggeration with the waist illuminates an hourglass body shape. The gap between boning enables this bustle to be relatively light-weight. This design has minimized the amount of boning for this everyday fashion essential. The white bustle color differentiates the black mannequin and the dark background. Thus the existence of bustle stood out and become easier for viewers to observe the object. The thought was really put into this exhibition.

The exhibition clearly shows the audience the fashion taste of the time period. After seeing this The Body: Fashion and Physiques, I feel the strong connection between fashion design and anthropology, how the designs cooperate with bodies and become lively (or say active). Therefore, as the reading said, the fashion exhibition the value of present the history of fashion, not only literal but also in a form of exhibiting is essential to people from all fields.
