Learning Portfolio Post #5 What is Fashion?

I hated this question since the word “fashion” didn’t sound pretty as it should be. My understanding of the idea of fashion was pretty shallowed as it described the object noun “fashion” as in garment pieces. I couldn’t remember exactly what I wrote in the first in-class writing. I probably said something like the object that wraps human body forms, or something that changes its trend across the time. After a semester of study, dig into the real concept behind “fashion”, I hate this word even worse. Since it actually is so complex and full that I find myself wordless, unable to describe it really.

As Christopher Breward said fashion nowadays is “the loss of skill and an understanding of the value of craft”. I agree with this statement upon to fashion is object/craft, but more of a creation. The creation doesn’t have to be an actual object, could be the presentation of an idea. I understand Breward’s word as “fashion in this century is lack of thought and made out of ridiculous taste and patience”.

However, as I mentioned, the complexity of fashion is way much heavier and denser than just “object” “skill”. It can be split into categories according to subcultures, time, age, gender, region, and much more. In addition, it’s not only limited to clothing but also body manipulation (tattoo, piercing…), hairstyle, lifestyle. To me, this word of “fashion” strongly connects to the word “trend”, in any field. Funny enough, date back decades, fashion was purer mainly directed to clothing.
