Bridge One:Memoir 100 drawings of Place

100 drawings reflection:

During the past week, we were asked to draw 100 pieces of drawings with only black sharpies. It was one of the most challenging and unique projects I have done. It was not only demanding physically but also mentally. Coming up with 100 drawings was not easy, and sometimes it was inevitable to get stuck. Therefore, apart from drawing the objects that were meaningful to me, I had also drawn random patterns. While drawing these random patterns, I could think of other ideas to draw for the next one.

This project allows me to explore my past and to remember many things that I have forgotten that were significant to me. Many things that I thought were trivial, suddenly all felt more meaningful. Due to the number of drawings I had to finish, it forced me to work faster. After finishing the project, I lined them all up, and I was surprised to see that my style of drawing was very consistent, despite the constant feeling of being stuck.

Most of my drawings are made up of my memories from the past, my passions, and what I love to do. A lot of the drawings also came from many trips I took over this summer, sceneries, animals, and objects. I have also explored some of my heritage while drawing, I searched up the most difficult Chinese character and also my Chinese last name. All of these things meant something to me and were displayed through the 100 drawings project.

Curations and description:

The first set of curation is based on my imagination. Since most of the drawings consist of regular shapes and patterns, I thought it might be a good idea to curate the ten drawings in a regular format. I attempted to make images asymmetrical or symmetrical. The white roses on top matches with the black roses at the bottom. The double lined triangle pattern on the left matches with the double lined rectangle patterns on the right. Thicker lines match with thicker lines, and similarly, circles with circles. Finally, in the middle, a singled-out drawing that’s different from the rest.

The next curation is based on observations. The drawings depict daily items that I use or places I visit on a regular basis. They demonstrate small things in my life that forms who I am, my habits, my personalities, and characters. With 10 drawings, I attempted to create a ladder that shows how myself identity is formed through things that are insignificant.

Finally, the last set of curation demonstrates the numerous trips I have taken over this summer. Pictures I have taken are turned in to quick drawings, moments I cherish. The aquarium and the bamboo forest I have visited in Japan, the beautiful water I have observed in Austria, evening mountain views and cute bunnies from Switzerland, my friend’s cat in the Netherlands, and the luxurious dessert I tried during my visit in Hungary… These 10 memories form this set of curation. Since the idea of memories sounds like a puzzle to me, complicated and scattered. Therefore, I have positioned these drawings loosely, with an almost even number of landscapes and portraits.
