REFLECTION OF THE PROJECT:

IMAGINING THE NEIGHBORHOOD REACTION IF THIS WAS PIECE WAS BUILT.

If this piece is built at the location I wanted my monument to be, it will be very easy to notice, since the size of the painting is very big. I think people will be very surprised and stop to look at the huge piece of painting. As for the neighborhood in specific, I think they will like this monument, people will gather around and discuss the painting.

WHAT WERE YOUR BIGGEST DISCOVERIES THROUGH THIS PROJECT AND THIS SEMESTER?

Through this project, I have gotten to know more about Chinatown as a community, not just a tourist attraction. I am more engaged in what is really happening in the community. I have learned to think from different perspectives and possibilities in how to present my monument.

HOW DOES THIS  PROJECT RELATE TO YOUR WORK IN STUDIO AND SEMINAR THIS SEMESTER AS WELL AS YOUR COURSEWORK IN OTHER CLASSES?

I think everything we did in the studio and seminar is very closely related and consistent. Every project we did link to one another. Therefore this project is also very closely related to the previous group project we did. There is also always a consistency in everything, therefore I was able to look into one specific area properly. I have also used the skills I learned from other classes in this final project, mostly in terms of photoshop. Therefore, I feel like this project has brought everything I learned from other classes together.

ONSIGHT research

I went to visit Chinatown many times during the making of this project in order to search for a better location for the placement of my monument. I also went to Chinatown to take a better look at the surroundings and conditions of Chinatown. I have noticed that the community is very inclusive and many of the Chinese immigrants in the community could barely speak any English. The above are some images I took along the way that shows potential locations I was thinking to put my monument. I figured that in order for it to my noticeable, I needed to be big enough and hang it high up. Therefore, most of the locations I have chosen on my second visit were sides of buildings in and around Chinatown. Initially, I was just looking at the map of Chinatown, making assumptions as to where I could potentially put the monument. I thought since Hong Kong supermarket has a heavier flow of people, it would be a good spot to set up the monument. However, when I actually went to visit, I realized that the way leading to the market was rather narrow and quiet. It’s impossible to set up at that location since the area is already crowded with buildings, and not very visible. Therefore, going back to Chinatown was very helpful for me to reconsider the locations and to find better potential locations to set up the monument.

DRAWING AND RENDERING OF THE FINAL MONUMENT

A sketch of the painting taken from  my sketchbook

I put the sketch in photoshop, traced it over and put A layer of worn out silk to demonstrate the material I want to use as my canvas

I then colored it

Finally, this is what it will look like as a monument in the real enviroment.
