Katherine Bernhardt – “Day/Night” (2017)

Original work

In her work, Katherine Bernhardt explores themes of consumerism and the duality of the organic vs. the material. In her piece “Day/Night” she incorporates various popular imagery mixed with natural imagery to create a juxtaposition between organic and material. While the background of the composition is divided, the images are scattered throughout the canvas; the objects are not confined to the “day” side or the “night” side. Using spray paint as her medium,  each objects bleeds into one another, blurring the boundaries between each as if they are becoming one. For my redesign, I wanted to digitize the painted image. Because Bernhardt works closely with themes of advertising, I wanted to utilize technology as a means of redesigning the work. My redesign is made entire through Instagram’s new GIPHY feature. This feature allows users to paste moving images on top of their images, like digital “stickers”. I changed two elements in doing my redesign: changing from stationary to moving image and two dimensional/analog to digital.

Henry Swanson – “Alright to Drive” (2017)

Original Work

Redesign (+ audio)

Henry Swanson’s piece also explores themes of materialism and advertising. In this piece, he mocks advertisements by defacing the Busch beer logo by spray painting “Happy B-Day Son” across the jacket. Because this piece is a a sculpture, it was more difficult to alter it; it was challenging to take away and add things to the image. I decided to remove the spray paint text and turn it into audio. In doing so, it changes the entire piece from a sculpture to an installation, transforming  the space it is in. If this proposal was implemented, the audio would play on loop within the space while the jacket remains displayed just as Swanson displayed it.
