From Nature to Industrialization

IDEA

The idea is using the ink drawing constructed by pattern of plant roots and multimedia collage to represent the industrialization process. From the nature to the city or even to the future, human is changing the landscape quickly in a way that we’ve never imagined. In order to build those houses and towns, countless plants and trees have been removed from the land that they lived hundreds years. The roots underneath the ground demonstrates human the time of their existence.

The outline is the landscape of New York City.

I designed an accordion style book. The reason that I wanted to use the book is because that the way accordion book was extended can be related to how time extended. It linear.

SKETCH & MATERIAL LISTS

It is totally 104 inches long.

The material included hay, bark board, linen, plastic, mirror film, reflection film, cotton, clear plastic.

The proportion of the past is the larger than the present, while the present is larger than the future.

DRAWING

FINAL

From the barked board and hay to the linen, human started to learn how to use natural resources combined with tools to create things. Gradually, the shape is becoming more geometric than organic, which represent the share where we are now.  The film that can reflect multicolor represents the thermal imagery, which implies that now we are consuming a lot of energy that was generated by fossil fuels underground.  Then the part that represents the future is the mirror film, the viewer can see themselves in there. This is an interaction part of the piece. It means that we are the people who will determine the future.

COVER

The cover is a fossil-like piece of plant roots. First, I use plastic cloth to make the shape painted it by acrylic. Then I created the wood frame so that it looks like the fossil has been collected. Instead of putting a clear plastic upon the fossil, I just kept it open to the people who want to touch it so that they can feel the shape of the roots.

REFLECTION

The multimedia that I’ve worked with and the accordion style really challenges me a lot. But this project helps me to understand the linear time better and it get me to think deeper about the meaning behind the choice of material and how the texture can convey the topic. Since I’m a communication design major, the experience of making an accordion book also values a lot because it helps me to know the process and the way I can use to construct it.
