collapsible chair project

Natalie and I decided to make the theme of space class for our projects, which is combining the element of organic and geometric shapes into our design. I always wanted to work with round, organic shape throughout the semester, and I finally accomplished it for the final project.

It was hard for me at first to come up with the design. There were too many possibilities that I want to try and I was being indecisive as usual. At first I came up with the idea of a long bench. The seating area was sliced in half and connected together by the two slots. (which are the legs of the chair) After finishing a little model of the old design, I was not satisfied of the look and it was not stable at all. So I changed my idea really quick because there weren’t too much time. The final design is inspired by a composition of shapes that I wanted to painted a long time ago. I found out that it is so much easier for me to picture a 2D design into 3D work.

Making 3D objects is always a huge challenge for me, it’s exactly like Steve said, learning a different language, both planning and  using new machines. The biggest challenge of this project is the sanding process. Everything needs to be super precise and clean in order to achieve the visual effect.

In the end, I was just really glad that I am able to learn all these new experiences. Although I already know for sure that I won’t spend as much time in the making center like this week, for the rest of the time I study here. I am happy that I met all the wonderful classmates and the professor that produced such amazing works and efforts to the class. Thank you.
