Final Project progress 11/4

Final Project Log-line:

It is a live performance, involving handmade puppet of an octopus, showcasing its organic movement from coming out of a small hole, and exploring it’s way of “walking” and exploring the space through its legs, and a final encounter with an object(that is not yet decided)that became a pause of its journey. There would also be playful visuals from the character’s shade by the lighting.

What will need to be accomplish:

Main Puppet Character

This is the demo puppet I made for the sculpting week, and for the final project the character will take some of this quality of this character. However, the puppet would not portray in a vertical format, considering its movement, it requires the quality of being flexible in terms of size and material in order for it to achieve more of a bone-less structure.

Here are some of the primary sketches for the main puppet.

The main focus of this puppet is the concentration of the legs movement, therefore is it important to reconsider how the joints and strings would work together.

As the sketch suggests, the re-design of the octopus is able to transform from a bag looking-like sculpture, to having a full body look of a creature. The color palette is not yet decided, however, I do wish it can be made with some sort of material that has some transparency and colorful for the light to reflect on.

This is a sketch of how I wanted the first scene to look like, there will be some sort of sand, mud, or material that surround the bag looking sculpture. As the legs slowing coming out from the bag, its feet would stain after touching to the ground, and as it walks, you will able to see it’s walking marks.

Lighting Experiment

An object that will encounter and interact with the puppet towards the end of its performance

-wood

-an object sinked into the ocean

A trace for the octopus to walk on

-wood

Notes:

Pick a leg

-the octopus only has to decide which arm to use for the pushing, it doesn’t need to decide which direction this arm will push. Octopus just need to pick which arm to recruit.

-Copper based blood: some visual changes will be made, eg: color/tone of the puppet, the environment that matches with the color palette.

Night environment:

-How does the character move through the space in the dark?

-Does the lighting move, or it is at a set spot? How does the lighting maybe help the story moves forward/ intensify the plot?

Inspiration board:

Here is also a composition I think is interesting to look at.
Performing style
Pause
I always think the process of the waiter removing the dishes in front of customers is also an important performance factor other than cooking. This one is an insane example, it made me think about this intermission, how can I expand and reframe this moment of pause.
Flicker
