Final Project Progress 11/11

The performance would be briefly separated into three sections:

-ToTo (octopus creature’s name) out from hole: ToTo will come out from the hole after the train passes by, ToTo is curious of its surroundings, but cautious at the same time. ToTo will slowly transform from a bag structure into full body.

-ToTo’s walk: This is ToTo’s free time to explore around the space, before the next train comes to dominate the space. ToTo wishes to look for a new habitat by its feet sensing the sound of the surrounded material. (The choreograph of the puppet in this scene will be mainly improvised)

ToTo’s encounter: ToTo might found a new place to make its living, or go back to its own confront zone, which is returning to its bag structure. This can’t be decided by ToTo, and it does not have a strong preference, but this will be always be a never-ending journey of his.

After having a general plot of the performance,  Im thinking about the possible location for the actual performance to take place. I thought it would make a contrast of visual and audio to put train (main noise source, somehow big, speedy) in contrast with the presence of ToTo (slow movement, micro-sound). After pitching my presentation to the seminar class, I got suggestion that this project should be documented and showcase to the class as a video format.

I live beside the train and I did not really notice how much my body is reacting and actually influenced by it. I am always conscious, somehow alerted every-time when I see the train passes by. The sound of the train dominates and hold the biggest presence in this area, since its one of the most busiest line, it feels like it never really have a time for relief except for the weekends, because the station would be under construction. The journey of ToTo became sort of like an intermission between trains to trains.

these are some fabric heat gun test I did, there are quite fun to work with, a lot of interesting textures that I think I might incorporate with the construction of the puppet.

Notes:

How does the fabric fold and create sound when it stretches/folded?

Manipulation of fabric / lighting test with the fabric

Lab Time:

I was following this folding paper tutorial

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KagPAH7Jt-M&list=PLaDneppryAhvty5MtAvW1IDAg4JYB5uwo&index=9

I did not successfully made the effect because I think the paper that I used was too thin that made it hard to stay in form. I will try again tomorrow and update on here.

Here is a update of my schedule:

Here is what I plan to have it done for next week 11/18:

-test swatches of the puppet’s body

-a mock up joint for the puppet

-visit site in person for environment observation and possible composition

-meeting with photo major friend and arrange date details about the shoot
