Space+Materiality Assignment # 9- Foam board (Planar) 3D Structure Parts 1 &2

Assignment description

Part 1

In this assignment we created a digital moldboard and researched three dimensional art forms and objects that use the concept of serial planes or similar construction with different materials.

Part 2

This part asked us to create a three dimensional abstract or representational form that is a minimum of 12”x12”x12” using foam core board. The form can be free standing, hanging or mounted on a base.

I used cardboard scraps I picked up in my garage and used it to create my 3 dimensional piece. I cut out different triangular shapes to create a pattern and repetition throughout the form. I used scissors to cut slits through the side to connect the separate pieces together and used toothpicks to help secure certain parts if needed. I poked toothpicks through the base of the structure and cut out the sides so the toothpicks are not visible. I created my form to have a leaning structure to it because I liked how the shapes appear as if they are floating with minimal support. I was impressed how the slits on the sides of the pieces connected with the other pieces without using any adhesives. Using cuts and toothpicks as mechanical connectors really helped secure everything together and allow the pieces to look stable stacked together. Next time, I would like to add more negative space in between the pieces to create an abstract look  and maybe add more curved lines to contrast the structured shapes.
